Thousand Year old Cultural - Man Tou

Man Tou is a type of Chinese pau or bread which is firm and dense eaten ever since known period of the Imperial Song Dynasty. It has a very soft texture and is often plain or white in color. Usually, people dip sauces or spread with butter or jam to taste. Make it even heartier, people turn them into breakfast by stuffing eggs, luncheon meat and pickles and sausages.

In Northen parts of China, it is typically eaten as a staple because rice is harder to obtain and much more expensive than wheat, which is what they are made of. Made of milled flour, water and leavening agents, Man tous are similar to breads in nutrition.

Nowadays, they have become ready made and sold at frozen sections in Asian supermarkets. People would just steam or microwave these frozen buns before serve for about 15 minutes on moderate heat. Some of the packaging nowadays have become fancier with spiral colorings in the middle indicating difference of flavorings. Most popular ones are Pandan, Chocolate, Strawberry and Yam flavors. Their counterparts are deep fried and dipped on Sweetened condensed milk served as a desert in China.
