Heard of Chinese Sticky Cake - Nien Gao"?

Chinese Nien Gao is a brown colored steamed sticky cake made from brown sugar, dates and milk. Very different in its texture from traditional sponge or butter cake. It tastes absolutely different and basically are sweet like honey. The nicest ones are soft enough to melt in your mouth and has very tempting fragrant. Touch it through the finger tips and you will know instantly whether it is a good quality one as mostly good ones feels elastically soft and smooth.


Chinese folks usually eat them during Chinese New Year seasons. The way to eat them is to cut them into slices. Another way is to fry them with eggs and usually this needs to be done if the cake has already been cooled or frozen from the fridge. They are part of the Chinese living culture and the story behind its name is upon eating makes us grow taller every year -- (Nien = Year , Gao = Grow Tall). In ancient times, parents make them for the children to eat so to ask them to grow healthy, strong and tall.
